Background:
The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) is a national not-for profit organization founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter to promote business-led economic development in America’s inner cities through private sector engagement that leads to job, income and wealth creation for local residents. ICIC brings together business and civic leaders to drive innovation and action, transform thinking, and accelerate inner city business growth. ICIC conducts research that highlights the competitive advantages of inner cities and runs programs designed to drive private capital into businesses in inner cities.
Position Description:
The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) seeks a high energy, entrepreneurial, results-focused and relationship-oriented leader to build and oversee ICIC’s development function. As a member of ICIC’s senior management team, the VP manages all of ICIC’s corporate development activities, including corporate partnerships and sponsorships, channel marketing and strategic alliances to increase ICIC’s resources and/or visibility, and resource development/partner cultivation events. In addition, the VP will coordinate with and support the Director of Research in her efforts to secure foundation and government grants. Finally, the VP will be responsible for developing, monitoring and evaluating ICIC’s overall revenue and partnership/alliance strategy, in close collaboration with ICIC’s Board of Directors and senior staff. Reporting to the CEO, the VP will lead a team of three, with the expectation that the team will grow as additional resources are secured.
Responsibilities:
•Develop goals and implement plan for corporate giving that encompasses mission-based gifts/grants, cause-related marketing, corporate sponsorships, and partnerships that drive value for the corporation.
•Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major corporate and institutional prospects and/or prepare the CEO or Board Members to make the solicitation.
•Oversee all events whose purpose is the generation of revenue or cultivation of funding prospects; coordinate with the Director of Programs to leverage program-focused events, as appropriate for cultivation, stewardship and fundraising.
•Prepare and develop proposals; develop consistent pricing across proposals.
•Ensure that corporate partners are stewarded effectively concerning the use of their investments, including compelling reports on outcomes, creative recognition activities, and follow-up meetings.
•Create and manage “channel partnerships” and alliances with other organizations to leverage their relationships to advance ICIC’s mission.
•Engage collaboratively, as a member of the Senior Management Team, blending ICIC’s goals with resource development opportunities; stay abreast of organization-wide issues and contribute creatively to the development and achievement of ICIC’s long-term vision and short-term operating plan.
•Partner with the Communications and Content Manager to increase national visibility of the organization in a manner that builds our fundraising potential.
•Work with CEO to create and staff a Board Development Committee.
•Monitor the effectiveness of corporate and event fundraising, recommending changes in strategy for optimal cost/benefit ratios, recommending strategic investments in new ventures, and promoting innovations that enhance existing events and activities.
•Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, social and community trends that would potentially impact ICIC resources and ensure that the staff and board are informed of these trends.
•Manage development budget and revenue forecasting processes; oversee donor database management system and processes; lead development team.
