Opis pracovnej pozície

Reports to: Managing Director, True North Public Schools UNCOMMON SCHOOLS Uncommon Schools (Uncommon) is a nonprofit organization that starts and manages outstanding urban charter public schools that close the achievement gap and prepare low-income students to graduate from college. Uncommon builds uncommonly great schools by developing and managing regional networks that are philosophically aligned and highly accountable and by designing and implementing “best-in-class” teacher training. Uncommon currently manages 16 schools serving approximately 3,000 students in New York City, upstate New York, and Newark, New Jersey. This fall, the organization will grow to 24 schools serving nearly 4,000 students in its current geographies and Boston, Massachusetts. Uncommon will ultimately grow to more than 38 schools, serving nearly 14,000 Kindergarten to 12th grade students. The organization has achieved outstanding academic results based on internal assessments, statewide exams, and graduation milestones. Its schools consistently outperform their district schools and are among the highest-performing urban schools in their cities and states. As part of its work managing and running schools, Uncommon has developed teacher training and development programs that have earned it a national reputation for excellence. The Taxonomy of Effective Teaching Practices, described in the book Teach Like a Champion, is a collection of instructional techniques gleaned from years of observations of outstanding teachers in some of the highest-performing urban classrooms in the country. Developed by Uncommon Schools Managing Director Doug Lemov and Uncommon teachers, this set of specific and concrete actions, paired with a library of over 700 video clips of highly-effective teachers at work, has provided teachers nationwide with ready-to-use tools to drive greater student achievement and a shared language to discuss and support teacher effectiveness. POSITION OVERVIEW The Chief Operating Officer (COO), Taxonomy of Effective Teaching Practices Project (Taxonomy) manages the critical tasks of developing and implementing all business and operating aspects of Uncommon’s Taxonomy-based teacher training tools. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Working alongside the Taxonomy Chief Video Officer and reporting to the Managing Director (MD), the Taxonomy COO will: Oversee business and programmatic relationships with Uncommon Schools, Teacher U, Teach For America, and other partners • Collaborate with Uncommon’s Human Capital Team to develop a platform upon which video and corresponding Taxonomy content can be effectively disseminated to Uncommon school leadership teams; • Develop and execute a Taxonomy implementation plan, including the delivery of workshops, presentations, site visits, and video application opportunities; • Plan and implement, with input from the Taxonomy Chief Video Officer (CVO), a “presenters camp,” an internal workshop designed to prepare internal personnel to lead high-impact Taxonomy workshops to a range of external audiences; • Observe and evaluate the quality of workshops offered, including those facilitated by additional internal trainers; • Coordinate the development of online modules with Teacher U and other key partners with the intention of limiting impact of Taxonomy efforts on core Uncommon tasks; • Ensure quality of final product and alignment with Uncommon goals; • Lead an analytic project to cross reference the Taxonomy with Teach For America’s TAL (Teaching As Leadership) framework; • Assist Recruitment Team in using data to determine Taxonomy training vehicles that best recruit high-quality candidates to Uncommon Schools; • Develop and test various delivery models (e.g., webinar follow up to training, Facebook videos, etc.) to build stronger, lasting relationships with Taxonomy training participants, with a focus on audience segmentation, needs analysis, and branding. Coordinate business and implementation opportunities • Develop and refine the train-the-trainer workshop business model, including: when and how often to run workshops; who to invite and according to what criteria; pricing; how to offer licensing and ensure success by larger clients (e.g., large urban districts); when and whether to consider alternative workshop models (e.g., direct to teachers, at specific schools); • Manage client relationships, including responding to inquiries from current and future licensees regarding permissible uses and cost of Taxonomy IP; • Determine production costs and logistics for dissemination opportunities; • Assess related business and dissemination opportunities such as “voice-over videos” for viability of economic and dissemination goals; • Identify and pursue an implementation study, which includes: determining criteria for test implementation site; writing a RFP for potential partner site; evaluating submissions; and setting terms of implementation work; • Build staffing model for implementation pilot and manage logistics and partner engagement regarding implementation pilot; • Ensure regular contributions to Facebook page and other online outreach in coordination with Uncommon’s Director of Marketing; • Manage media inquiries and other outreach and dissemination tasks. Coordinate Taxonomy operations • Track and manage all production, development, and presentation tasks, both for internal and external clients and ensure that projects are completed in time, at cost, and meet stated goals; • Support CVO in refining internal production processes in achieving maximum efficiency and effectiveness; • Oversee the Taxonomy budget. Program review/data analysis • Develop and implement analytical tools for determining best internal practices and practitioners; • Develop and test analytical model for long term evaluation of the Taxonomy; • Evaluate validation proposals by outside parties for alignment; • Work with the CVO to track and evaluate data on implementation of Taxonomy in internal and external environments and lead a process to set and assess progress towards specific goals in partnerships with TFA, Teacher U and others. Grant coordination and management • Support Development and Finance Teams in identifying, evaluating and securing grant opportunities that are strategically aligned with the Taxonomy; • Coordinate and track activities and reporting required by awarded grants, write reports, and develop data sets to support grant reports; • Develop a long term project plan with calendar to track completion of all grant-related projects to ensure timely compliance; • Work with CFO to ensure financial tracking and reporting on all grants; During SY 2010-2011 this will include: Pilot implementation in pilot suburban district and evaluating impact and challenges; Internal implementation study to determine effective methods used in training by schools; Internal implementation study to determine top performing individual teachers.
