Hesperian, nonprofit publisher of Where There Is No Doctor and other resources for grassroots health programs worldwide, is looking for a Business Manager to lead our financial management/accounting operations, help shape the direction of Hesperian’s move into Digital Media, and facilitate increase in sales Combining elements of both a small press and a solidarity organization, Hesperian collaborates internationally with health workers and grassroots groups to develop materials for community-based health care that are accessible, medically complete, and examine political, social, and economic causes of poor health. Comprehensive, empowering, and easy-to-use, Hesperian materials promote self-reliance and self-determination, by providing communities with the basic information that they need to improve their own health conditions. Our publications (including those in development) address environmental health, worker health and safety, HIV/AIDS, women\'s health, midwifery, community mental health, women with disabilities, children with disabilities, health worker training, and dentistry. Our open copyright policy has led to Hesperian materials being translated into more than 100 different languages and used in resource-poor communities worldwide. SUMMARY OF POSITION: Hesperian seeks a Business Manager to oversee the accounting and financial management of the organization, shape thinking and implementation of strategic digital initiatives, establish metrics for program effectiveness, and oversee and support our publication sales and shipping activities. The Business Manager will supervise a team that includes: a Staff Accountant, an IT Manager, and a Fulfillment Manager responsible for book sales and shipping. We seek a proven manager and team builder with strong financial management skills and experience; a commercial background is a plus. This is a full-time position, reports to the Executive Director and is a member of the senior management team. Our plans for the next year include improving upon our current systems to streamline accounting and management practices, strategic planning to support Hesperian’s initiative to deliver our health content through digital media, establishing metrics to measure financial, operational and program effectiveness, and facilitating an increase in book sales. RESPONSIBILITIES: Financial Management (45%) • Oversee accounting system and procedures for organization (average annual budget of $2 million) • Manage financial records and reports, including financial reports to funding organizations and internal financial reporting • Oversee annual budgeting process and quarterly income and expense projections, working closely with the Executive Director and senior management team • Establish a management dashboard to measure and assess organization’s performance and impact • Manage benefits administration and payroll • Supervise Staff Accountant to ensure that regular bookkeeping and accounting processes are functioning in a timely and accurate fashion • Negotiate commercial contracts with vendors and find ways to optimize cost with existing vendors Information technology planning and implementation (25%) • Ensure ongoing technology planning and upgrading of Hesperian’s technical infrastructure • Participate in strategic planning and development of Hesperian’s initiative to deliver our health content through digital media • Lead communication and coordination with rest of organization regarding technology needs, upgrades and maintenance • Oversee relationships with external vendors for technology services, software, hardware, equipment contracts, purchases and maintenance • Supervise IT Manager Support Earned Revenue Activities (20%) • Supervise Fulfillment Manager to ensure the efficient function of publication sales, fulfillment and shipping operations, and the generation of earned revenue (approximately $480,000/year).
