POSITION OVERVIEW iMentor is seeking a seasoned leader excited by the potential of leveraging technology for social impact. The VP of Engineering (VP of E) will lead the strategy, a staff team, and all technology design and implementation to ensure the sustainability and scalability of the iMentor Interactive (iMi) platform, a central tool in iMentor’s ability to build one of the largest mentoring programs in any single city and to lead a national mentoring movement. The VP of E will combine skill sets in technology engineering, business strategy, project management, and product development in order to direct the quality and evolution of iMi, iMentor’s proprietary mentoring technology, as iMentor grows to serve 3,000 mentee-mentor pairs in New York City and 50,000 users around the country. The VP of E will join the diverse, passionate, hardworking, and fun staff of 50 at iMentor, one of the nation’s most innovative and quickly growing social enterprises committed to closing the achievement gap in the U.S. through quality mentoring. iMentor was recently selected for inclusion in the first ever federal Social Innovation Fund and recognized as one of the 50 Best Nonprofits to Work by The Nonprofit Times. RESPONSIBILITIES The VP of Engineering will be responsible for scaling iMi to serve more than 150 organizational members with 50,000 users by 2013. S/he will work closely with iMentor’s senior leadership team and the iMentor Interactive staff to ensure the functioning and sustainability of the platform, to develop and implement innovations necessary to solve challenges our partners face, and to strategically and cost-effectively manage the platform. The VP of E will oversee a team and manage operating and capital budgets for iMi. We seek an individual with 7-10 years of experience directing product and software development initiatives. We expect the VP of E to have a combination of both technical project management and business strategy experience. Candidates must be skilled leaders who are able to motivate people towards innovation and delivering solutions to difficult problems.   Product Development Management • Establish and supervise the software development process, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress. Manage the release process. • Develop and deploy operating and capital budgets for iMi. • Create systems and processes for User Experience, software development, performance profiling, coding conventions and documentation standards. • Implement quality assurance process, including integration and system testing. • Monitor platform analytics to measures site traffic and application usage. • Establish a process to integrate support with the software engineering process to facilitate resolution of customer issues and improve application usability. Product Strategy & Planning • Lead the iMi platform to achieve social and business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of enhancements and features. • Identify opportunities and risks for iMi, including competitors, innovations, marketplace obstacles, and technical hurdles to business success. • Evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms. • As a member of the senior leadership team, serve as a thought partner in overall organizational strategic planning. Operational Management and Leadership • Oversee the performance of staff and external vendors responsible for the development, improvement, and maintenance of iMi. • Oversee technical support for iMi ensuring excellent and prompt resolution of issues. • Maintain strong grasp of industry trends, cutting edge technology, and marketplace changes to ensure that iMentor remains ahead of potential competitors. Risk Management • Oversee information security plan that protects the integrity and availability of the company’s and vendors’ data and servers. • Design and implement disaster recovery and business continuity plans. • Manage information security audits.
