Safe Horizon offers the most comprehensive services for victims of crime and abuse in the nation. We help victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, child abuse, human trafficking, stalking, and any other type of crime and abuse to heal and rebuild their lives. No matter where a person is in his or her life span – from young children, to teens, to young adults, to the elderly – we are here to help. In addition to our direct services in New York City, we provide national awareness and education programs on child abuse and domestic violence. Since 1978, Safe Horizon has been here to help adults and children in crises to heal and recover, and to break the cycle of abuse. The Senior Vice President, Communications and Marketing, is responsible for both the public profile of Safe Horizon, and internal communications. He/she will manage and develop the public profile and image of Safe Horizon, in all media, including editorial coverage, written materials, collateral, videos, new media, etc.; and will manage and develop internal communications to our diverse staff of 650 throughout our 50 New York City locations. Safe Horizon recently completed a strategic planning process that calls for us to assume a position of national thought leadership in the area of programs that help victims of crime and abuse. The Senior Vice President, Communications and Marketing, will play a key leadership role in this strategic undertaking. Essential Job Functions: Overall: • Position Safe Horizon as the thought and practice leader in providing services to survivors of crime and abuse. • Play a key role in messaging strategic and organizational changes to organization-wide staff. • In collaboration with development department, program staff, and other colleagues, provide fresh and appropriate website content. • Cultivate relationships with former clients who would like to tell their stories, and help them craft their stories for public speaking, videos, written testimonials, Develop relationships with program staff and cultivate stories for publication. • Prepare executive speeches/talking points for press interviews, public events, fundraisers, etc. • Develop and manage publication guidelines, house style sheet and templates for organizational materials. • Create and implement a crisis communications plan, both externally and internally, that anticipates possible adverse events. Manage crisis communications should the need arise. • Staff and support the Board Marketing Committee. • Implement and manage any special initiatives as determined. • Supervise an effective Communications department comprising 3-4 individuals (including the SVP). Hire appropriate staff to carry out goals. • Manage paid and pro bono consulting relationships as appropriate. • Complete other duties as assigned and appropriate. Media Relations: • Develop an annual strategic public relations plan, including an editorial calendar to proactively place appropriate stories and key messages in the press. • Serve as resource to media by providing information, representing Safe Horizon as a spokesperson where applicable, arranging interviews with key executives and staff and effectively communicating the goals, messages and objectives of Safe Horizon. • Monitor and analyze media coverage. Develop relationship with key media and proactively disseminate information. Public Profile: • Design and implement future campaigns to raise public awareness of the organization. Any such campaign would be carefully coordinated with any cause marketing initiatives under way. • Support Development department in implementing cause marketing campaigns and initiatives by seeking donated and/or low-cost ad space, developing needed collateral, etc. • Develop and produce collateral for many purposes, including fundraising events, program signage, annual report, program brochures, etc. • Develop and support events that will help promote Safe Horizon and further our reach. These might include satellite tours, media events, movie screenings, program events, etc. • Develop brand guidelines and ensure compliance in all organizational materials, including materials translated into languages other than English. Internal Communications: • In collaboration with HR and program leadership, significantly improve management’s ability to communicate messages internally to a diverse staff of 650 in more than 60 locations. • Manage all communications on the Intranet; create a useful resource for all staff. Improve and produce internal staff newsletter. Supervisory Reports: There is currently one direct report, with room in the budget for modest additional staffing. Interacts with: Development team, program staff, IT, HR, outside consultants & Board marketing committee.
